Life by the Sea: An exploration through 3 pedagogical approaches

There are a variety of learning philosophies that start at Preschool. Apart from the traditional approach, the 3 major and highly-regarded are Montessori, Reggio inspired and Waldorf education. This summer, we'll explore "Life by the Sea" using the 3 approaches. Our young campers will be busy enjoying an array of exciting activities from culinary arts, STEM, sensory play to arts and crafts! A Comparison of Philosophies

Key differences between Montessori, Reggio Emilia & Waldorf approaches

Montessori Icon

Montessori

Founded by Maria Montessori, an Italian scientist who used methods of scientific observation to develop her approach to education. To this day, her approach emphasizes observation of children learning and altering of learning environments based on teachers’ observations.

Reggio Emilia

Founded by Loris Malaguzzi and established in a town named Reggio Emilia, this approach grew out of a desire in post-WWII Italy to "bring change and create anew". The focus was on cooperation between children, learning democratic skills, and creating links between children and their communities.
Waldorf Steiner Icon

Waldorf /Steiner

Based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, who believed in cultivating children’s spirituality. He was inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s idea that children are best raised in natural, homely and comfortable environments uncorrupted by the outside world of adults.

Each child has an natural set of strengths, which emerges differently from each individual.

Every child understands how to construct learning on their own & have the ability to express their knowledge and understanding.

Children are capable, confident, creative and active learners.

Classroom & Environment

Mixed-age classroom to motivate younger ones to learn & develop confidence in the older children.

Classroom that provides real tools that work as practical life exercises is an integral part of its approach.

Environment is critical and considered as the “Third Teacher”.

Space organized for small and large group projects, with an atelier (art studio) where children are given a wide range of materials to express themselves.

Homelike environment as classrooms are seen as an extension of the home in both design and function.

Emphasis on natural materials; toys often made of wood and earthy colours are used to promote links to nature.
